Chadwell Mews, EC1
Seven Mews Houses | Back to Project Listing
Formally a carpark tucked away behind a block of Georgian terraces, Chadwell Mews reimagines this forgotten space as a lush refuge from the surrounding city. The scheme is deceptive in its use of space, cleverly hiding private sunken courtyards for each house to avoid overlooking issues and creating seven unique homes.
Whilst most houses in the development maintain a similar design language, the exception is House 7, which is entirely sunken beneath the communal landscaped areas of the scheme. Despite the subterranean location of this house, the descending stairs and central courtyard are cleverly designed to allow maximum light into the internal spaces.
Although unassuming from the street, Chadwell Mews hides a unique development that prioritises quality design and materials. The former brownfield site has been reinvigorated with greenery at every level, with future climate change considered in the inclusion of elements such as PV panels and a water attenuation system.
