Islington: thirty years on, still the perfect fit for us

This year marks 30 years since we established Tasou Associates.

We’re still based in Islington, near to where we set up our very first office in Barnsbury. In fact, we’re close to the street where the family settled when we moved to London from Cyprus in 1959, a time when trolleybuses still rattled down Upper Street.

So Islington has always been at the heart of our practice. Its beautifully proportioned Georgian squares and terraces are as elegant now as when we started out, but we love the area’s modern architecture – like the stunning Glass House by Future Systems - just as much as its 18th century gems. It turned out that this borough was just the right home for our practice, with planners who were unusually open to modern design. Twenty and even thirty years ago they were already a forward-looking team who welcomed new ideas. It was a natural fit for our clean, modernist aesthetic that at the time - when mock Tudor was still very much in demand - was really breaking the mould.

We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved over the last three decades and we’re looking forward to completing even more exciting projects in the future.
